Ideal Trip: Bike Touring On E-Bikes

The TransCanada hits Quebec City and heads northeast along the St. Lawrence until it swings straight east towards New Brunswick. That turn off is the unofficial start of the Gaspe Pennisula at the city of Riviere-du-Loup. This peninsula in southern Quebec has loomed large over my imagination for a long time. Friends had visited with stories of moose, waves and bald eagles. It looks fun. And it was. Late summer to early fall is a great time to travel if you work as photographer and your wife is on maternity leave. Campgrounds at the national parks are easier to book and the seasonal restaurants are still open. We left Ontario at the end of August with our three-month old with a view to reaching Newfoundland by early October. Plans changed, as they do with three-month olds. We never made it further than Cape Breton.

Ideally you would have two weeks to give yourself the chance to appreciate this part of Canada. Mind you, we experienced it in early September, but google the Chic-Chocs if you want an idea of winter out here. On our version of the trip we saw many people on bike touring setups make the pilgrimage around on two human-powered wheels. For Lyn and I, doing this by bike is the bucket list for Gaspe. All the small towns, places to camp, places to see and explore - all the things you can do if you don’t have a baby essentially allergic to car seats!

I don’t like to write big, long paragraphs about where I travel and the things we get to see. Anecdotes and relevant information abound online with many, more talented people having gone before me. But you are welcome to view the route through my eyes. Hopefully you see and feel a bit of what we did.
